Frequently Asked Questions
1. Tours & Activities
Q: What is "Bamboo Tour"?
A: We offer private, immersive journeys centered around the historic townscape of Takehara (known as the "Little Kyoto of Aki") and the beautiful islands of the Seto Inland Sea, such as Osaki-Kamijima and Okunojima. Our tours are designed to let you experience the essence of Japanese spiritual culture through all five senses—including bamboo crafting, pottery, Kintsugi workshops, Zazen meditation at local temples, and traditional Buddhist vegan cuisine.
Q: Is it possible to create a personalized itinerary not found in guidebooks?
A: Absolutely! We specialize in "bespoke" travel tailored to each guest's specific interests and pace. Whether it’s art, gastronomy, history, or nature, we can help you explore hidden gems in the Takehara Preservation District and the surrounding islands. We welcome any specific requests and will design a one-of-a-kind journey that fits you perfectly.
Q: Can I change the duration of my stay or the places I visit?
A: Yes, we are very flexible. We can adjust your schedule from a full 5-day tour to a deep-dive day trip. As locals who know the Setouchi area inside out, we can suggest the best routes based on Takehara as your starting point. Please feel free to share your "ideal trip" vision with us.
Q: Can beginners participate in the Kintsugi workshop?
A: Yes, definitely! Your guide is an artist who studied ceramics in the UK and currently practices in the Setouchi region. We offer a special program where even beginners can experience the ancient Japanese wisdom of restoring broken pottery in a short amount of time. You will have the chance to work with shards of famous Japanese ceramics, such as Arita-yaki and Kutani-yaki.
Q: Can I take my pottery home on the same day?
A: Since pottery requires sufficient time for drying and firing after shaping, it takes approximately two months to complete. We will carefully finish each piece and ship it to your designated address (shipping fees apply). We hope you look forward to receiving your creation as a special memento of your trip to Setouchi.
2. Access & Transportation
Q: How do I get there from Hiroshima Airport?
A: Takehara city is about a 30-minute drive from Hiroshima Airport. We recommend using the "Jumbo Taxi" (Shared Taxi) service. It is cost-effective and provides door-to-door service, which is very convenient if you have heavy luggage.
Q: I am worried about transportation on the islands.
A: On Osaki-Kamijima, our partner accommodations provide free shuttle services and car rentals for guests. We will ensure you can enjoy sightseeing without stress, even where public transport is limited. Please note that Okunojima (Rabbit Island) is a car-free island; you can explore it comfortably on foot or by bicycle.
Q: How do I get to Rabbit Island (Okunojima)?
A: It is a 15-minute ferry ride from Tadanoumi Port. Taking a taxi from Takehara to the port is the smoothest way to travel. Once on the island, you can walk or rent a bicycle to meet the wild rabbits roaming freely.
3. Food & Accommodation
Q: Do you cater to vegetarians or vegans?
A: While options can be limited in rural areas, we can arrange an authentic Buddhist vegan course (Shojin Ryori) at the historic Chozenji Temple. For other meals and accommodations, we will do our best to accommodate your dietary needs if you consult with us in advance.
Q: What kind of accommodations are included?
A: We carefully select unique accommodations that tell a "story of the land," such as renovated Edo-period merchant houses and cozy "Kominka" (traditional folk houses). You can enjoy a stay that feels more like living in the town rather than just staying in a hotel. We also offer traditional Ryokans with hot springs (Onsen).
4. Miscellaneous
Q: Is English support available?
A: Yes! Your guide has lived in the UK for many years and is fully fluent in English. You can rely on us for smooth communication throughout your journey. For inquiries in other languages, please contact us via our web form.
Q: What happens in case of bad weather?
A: If ferries are cancelled or weather conditions are poor, we prioritize your safety and will propose alternative activities, such as indoor experiences within the Takehara Preservation District.
